چکیده

Within the past decade, two reports have appeared purporting to demonstrate much greater human sensitivities to the genetic effects of radiation than are consistent with the Japanese or mouse data that I summarized earlier in this program. This presentation will review these reports, both of which are badly flawed, and then proceed to a few poignant remarks concerning the responsibilities of scientists, scientific journals, and even the press, with respect to highly sensitive genetic topics.

Father's occupational exposure to radiation and the raised level of childhood leukemia near the Sellafield nuclear plant.

The first indications that childhood leukemia rates may be raised near the Sellafield nuclear plant in West Cumbria, England, came from largely anecdotal evidence in a television program "Windscale: The Nuclear Laundry" shown during 1983. During subsequent years, various epidemiological studies have investigated the claim in more detail. Geographical analyses of childhood leukemia incidence in ...

Further evidence for elevated human minisatellite mutation rate in Belarus eight years after the Chernobyl accident.

Analysis of germline mutation rate at human minisatellites among children born in areas of the Mogilev district of Belarus heavily polluted after the Chernobyl accident has been extended, both by recruiting more families from the affected region and by using five additional minisatellite probes, including multi-locus probe 33.6 and four hypervariable single-locus probes. These additional data c...

Detection of R882 Mutations in DNMT3A Gene in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Method Comparison Study

Background: Somatic mutations in the hotspot region of the DNA-methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) gene were recurrently identified in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is believed that DNMT3A mutations confer an adverse prognosis for AML patients. These lines of evidence support the need for a rapid and cost-efficient method for the detection of these mutations. The present study aimed to establish h...

The sex ratio of children in relation to paternal preconceptional radiation dose: a study in Cumbria, northern England.

STUDY OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the occupational exposure to external ionising radiation of men employed at the Sellafield nuclear installation, West Cumbria, affects the sex of the children they subsequently father. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study using logistic regression to analyse the sex ratio, in particular in relation to paternal preconceptional irradiation. SETTING AND PA...

Asthma, airways responsiveness and air pollution in two contrasting districts of northern England.

BACKGROUND To assess the possible magnitude of differences between normal populations an epidemiological investigation of asthma was conducted in two strongly contrasting districts of northern England--rural West Cumbria on the west coast and urban Newcastle upon Tyne on the east coast. METHODS A cross sectional survey of randomly identified men aged 20-44 years was conducted in two phases: p...
